A step-by-step guide to making the tiniest, most adorable western hats for your favorite Sylvanian families If you’re brand-new to crochet, read my quick guide to learning how to crochet first.

“Tiny accessories, big style. I feel my most beautiful in my cowgirl hat and skirt set, fantasizing about life on the ranch.”
– Blair, Calico Critter Persian Cat Triplet
If you’ve ever looked at your Calico Critters (also sold as Sylvanian Families) and thought, they need hats (specifically tiny, crochet cowboy hats) you are in exactly the right place. These miniature western hats are surprisingly quick to make, wildly photogenic, and make for unforgettable gifts.
Why crochet mini hats for Calico Critters?
Because they’re absolutely adorable. Every time I post a photo of my critters wearing these little hats, it goes viral. We’re talking thousands of saves, shares, and comments from people who didn’t even know they needed to see a tiny crochet cowboy hat until that exact moment. There’s something about the combination of miniature figures and handmade accessories that hits just right.
They also use almost no materials. All you really need is a 1.5 crochet hook and a very tiny amount of crochet thread. I can’t even weigh how much yarn they use because it isn’t enough to register on my scale!
Calico Critters are also super consistent as a canvas. The figures are all roughly 1.5 to 2 inches tall, and their proportions stay similar across species, which means that a hat that fits your bunny will probably fit your bear or your mouse too. That makes it easy to batch-make a whole ranch crew once you’ve got the pattern down.
Don’t be intimidated by the size. Good things come in small packages. Once you’ve done a few rounds, your hands will adapt quickly. Many crafters find miniature work meditative once they get into the rhythm.
What size Calico Critters will these fit?
These hats will fit Calico Critter babies, such as the Persian Cat Triplets. These are typically the smallest size they come in. If you have a larger critter, you may need to adjust the hook and yarn sizes or amount of rows and stitches to get the desired fit.
Materials
- A 1.5 mm crochet hook (This is the exact one I use)
- Size 10 crochet thread (yarn around this size also works, but it might come out slightly bigger or smaller)
- Scissors
- A tapestry needle to weave in ends
The Pattern
Abbreviations (US terms)
- sc – single crochet
- inc – increase
- hdc – half double crochet
- blo – back loop only
Pattern
Round 1: 4 sc into a magic ring
Round 2: 4 sc inc (8 stitches)
Round 3-4: 8 sc (8 stitches)
Optional: Add more rows of sc to make a taller hat
Round 5: 8 hdc inc blo (16 stitches)
Optional: add more rows of sc or hdc to make a bigger brim
Invisible fasten off (tutorial), then weave in and cut ends.
Shape the hat with your hands slightly to make it more like a cowboy hat – flatten the top and lift up the sides of the brim.
Put the hat on your critter. Done!
Frequently asked questions
Will this pattern fit other miniature figures, not just Calico Critters?
Possibly, it depends on the scale of your figures. Calico Critters are roughly 1:12 scale. Compare the size of your figures to Calico Critter babies and size your yarn and hook up or down accordingly.
Is this pattern suitable for beginners?
While this project is very quick and uses simple stitches, the small yarn and hook size make the stitches difficult to see. I recommend trying this pattern only after you understand how to count and see the anatomy of crochet stitches very well.
What’s the difference between Calico Critters and Sylvanian Families?
They are the same product . Sylvanian Families is the original Japanese brand name used in Europe, Japan, and Australia. Calico Critters is the North American name. The figures are identical and this pattern works for both.
Can I sell hats made from this pattern?
You’re welcome to sell finished items made from this pattern for personal handmade sales (Etsy, craft fairs, etc.). Please do not reproduce or resell the pattern itself.
My hat keeps sliding off — how do I fix that?
The fit varies slightly between Calico Critters species since head shapes differ (rabbits have longer ears, bears have rounder heads). I recommend using this pattern for display purposes only. If you really want your hat to stay on, attach two threads to the sides of the hat and tie them underneath the critters head. You can also try double sided tape on the inside of the hat, but it might snag the threads or critter hairs during removal.
